Michael Hauer, his love of music led him to master several instruments, and he became a member of several community bands. His career advanced when he became a popular dance bandleader in the Big Band Era. The Michael Hauer WLW Radio Orchestra was popular in the 1930s and broadcast as "Michael Hauer and His Band of the Hour" In 1937, Hauer opened a music shop in Dayton, which became one of the largest independently-owned music stores in the Midwest. His desire to share the joys of music with the youth of the community led him to start a band program in the parochial schools, complete with instruments at no cost to the schools. His need for more space led him to restore the old Sachs-Pruden Brewery building, which remains on the National Register of Historic Places.
